Demonstrations in Greece on anniversary of student killing by police

The massive demonstrations in Athens to mark the eighth anniversary of the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos by police, turned violent on Tuesday night.
The annual march to commemorate the incident has drawn thousands of anti-establishment and anti-austerity protesters.
About 3,000 police officers were deployed to monitor the demonstrations.
Exarcheia, the district where the teen boy was murdered, was turned again into a battlefield.
Riot Police run through flames caused by Molotov cocktails, firecrackers and also butane canister bombs.
Around 30 people were detained or arrested.
Grigoropoulos was 15-years-old when he was killed in 2008 by two police officers. His death resulted in large protests throughout Greece, and solidarity demonstrations around the world.

Greece: Police break up students protest in memory of Alexis Grigoropoulos

Athens, Greece, 6 December 2013

About 2,500 high school students march in Athens to mark the fifth anniversary of the fatal police shooting of the teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos.
Police breaks up protest thus cancelling the following planned concert.
Riot police practice ''kettling'' tactics to the students protesters and besides allow them to go away after having suffered body search.
Citizens complain shouting that teenage girls suffered body search by Riot squads.

Χιλιάδες μαθητές παίρνουν μέρος στην πορεία διαμαρτυρίας για την 5η επέτειο της μνήμης του Αλέξανδρου Γρηγορόπουλου, που γίνεται υπό την έντονη επιτήρηση και την προκλητικότητα των αστυνομικών δυνάμεων. Τα Προπύλαια πολιορκούνται από τα ΜΑΤ, που διαλύουν την πορεία και εγκλωβίζουν εκατοντάδες μαθητές και μαθήτριες που βρίσκονται εκεί για την προγραμματισμένη συναυλία.
Εκατοντάδες άτομα, στην πλειονότητά τους ανήλικα παιδιά, παραμένουν περικυκλωμένα σχεδόν μία ώρα στο περιστύλιο και στα σκαλιά της Πρυτανείας, υπό ασφυκτικό αστυνομικό κλοιό. Τα ΜΑΤ επιτρέπουν σε όσους μαθητές και μαθήτριες βρίσκονται εκεί να φύγουν μόνο αφότου περάσουν από εξονυχιστικό σωματικό έλεγχο.
Πολίτες διαμαρτύρονται για τον λόγο ότι κορίτσια υπέστησαν σωματικό έλεγχο από άνδρες αστυνομικούς.

Greece: Immigrant dies during police operation in Athens



An immigrant from Senegal died falling from a height, on the rails of the subway in Thiseio station in central Athens, during an operation of Municipal Police to remove street vendors from tourist area.

A big operation of Municipal Police started on Friday afternoon on the touristic area of Thiseio, in central Athens, to remove immigrants from the streets, who work as street vendors to live.
During this operation Cheikh Babacar Ndiaye a 37 years old immigrant from Senegal, was chased and he died falling from a height, on the rails of the subway in Thiseio station.
From the blood seen on the pictures possibly his death resulted from the fall.
Subway metro services were disrupted for at least two hours.
First aid assistants removed the body of the immigrant from the rails.
Meanwhile his friends gathered at the station, together with other people from Senegal.
Some of them mourned, but when they saw the stretcher with the dead body they began to shout and protest. Some of them they shouted that Police is racists.
Riot police arrived immediately and attacked the gathered people, and cleared the area around the station.
At the same moment of the attack the dead body of immigrant was moved to an ambulance and left the area, for an unknown and undeclared direction, in spite of the questions made ​​on this.

Youth protest police brutality in memory of Alexis Grigoropoulos


Students protested police brutality in commemoration of the death of Alexis Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old student who was shot dead by a police officer in 2008. Two demonstrations were held and a temporary memorial set up at the spot where he died.

«Είσαι σχεδόν 20 χρονών τώρα πια...
το σχολείο έχει τελειώσει και κοντεύεις να γίνεις ολόκληρος άντρας!

Students protest Police brutality in commemoration of the assassination of Alexis Grigoropoulos, a 15-years-old student who was shot dead by a Police officer on December 6th, 2008. Two demonstrations are held and a memorial on the site of murder.

On the fourth anniversary of Alexis murder, thousands of students and young people demonstrate in Athens center.
Police deploys some 5,000 policemen to prevent possible riots.
Two metro stations (Syntagma, Panepistimio) have been closed to public as of 10 a.m., until the end of the day.

Both demonstrations are mainly peaceful, and protesters shout slogans against Police brutality, and against fascism.
"You give money to the banks and bullets to youth" a banner reads.
Both demonstrations ended in clashes with Police and at least 78 people have been detained of which 9 were arrested.

At 9:00 p.m. a memorial gathering is held on the site of murder, where a monument is built with Alexis picture and flowers.
Many people leave there some notes written on paper.
A letter written by a classmate of Alexis, named Stelios, reads:

"You are now 20 years old...
You have finished college, and you are now an adult.
We are all proud of you, but we miss you...!
And we miss you mostly, because it was unfair!!!
We will NEVER forget you!!!
You're gonna live with us, for EVER!!!
