Οι σαΐτες είναι χάρτινοι κύλινδροι παραγεμισμένοι με μπαρούτι και ρινίσματα σιδήρου που δημιουργούν τους σπινθηρισμούς. Clashes erupt in Athens on Sunday when football fans attack Pakistanis holding a march celebrating a religious holiday marking Prophet Muhammad birth anniversary. Associated Press reports that Greek police have used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse a violent altercation between supporters of a soccer club and members of Athens’ Pakistani community. Muslims in Greece self-flagellate to mark day of Ashura




Shi'ite Muslim community in Piraeus (port of Athens, Greece) marks the day of Ashura with tears, prayer, and self-flagellation. The religious festival of Ashura commemorates the killing of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohamed, by armies of the caliph Yazid in 680 AD. Tradition holds that the revered imam was decapitated and his body mutilated in the Battle of Karbala.

Fundamentalists in Greece protest over mosque and electronic ID

Greek Orthodox Christian Fundamentalists hold a rally on Sunday evening outside the Parliament in Athens, against "satanic" ID cards, bank cards, tax numbers "which have the sign of the Antichrist" as they say.
They also protest against the city's first official mosque that is about to be built by the Government.
"We are ready to loose our life against the mosque! Greece is a land of saints and heroes and there is no place for a mosque" a priest says.

Στα Προπύλαια και έξω από την Βουλή διαδήλωσαν το βράδυ της Κυριακής φανατικοί ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί και ζηλωτές ιερωμένοι ενάντια στην κάρτα του πολίτη, αλλά και ενάντια στο Μουσουλμανικό Τέμενος της Αθήνας που κτίζεται.
"Θα δώσουμε και την ζωή μας για να μη γίνει Τζαμί" δηλώνουν χαρακτηριστικά, ενώ η ρητορική τους χαρακτηρίζεται από αντισημιτισμό και ισλαμοφοβία.

Rocketwar "Rouketopolemos" marks Easter in Greece

Vrontados, Chios Island, Greece 20 April, 2014.
The annual Rocketwar event known as Rouketopolemos, took place in the village of Vrontados, between the two Orthodox churches Agios Markos and Panagia Erithiani, started during the celebration of the service at midnight before Easter Sunday.
The respective churches of the two rival parishes are built on two hilltops about 400 meters away from each other.
Tens of thousands of home-made rockets are fired across town, with the objective of hitting the bell tower of the church of the other side.
The rockets are wooden sticks loaded with an explosive mixture containing gunpowder and launched from grooved platforms.
They are handmade and all materials used can be found on the island. Rocket making for "Rouketopolemos" is a tradition which counts more that 120 years in Chios. The rocket-makers work as groups of 10 to 15 people, and pass the tradition and their secret recipes from one generation to the other. They describe that they spend countless hours through the year preparing the rockets, and that the whole procedure of making and finally firing the rockets is a unique and insuperable experience.

Πάσχα με φαντασμαγορικό ρουκετοπόλεμο στη Χίο.
Το κορυφαίο έθιμο του Πάσχα γνωστό ως Ρουκετοπόλεμος ξεκίνησε και φέτος το βράδυ του Μεγάλου Σαββάτου και ολοκληρώθηκε τις πρώτες πρωινές ώρες του Πάσχα με εξαιρετική επιτυχία. Χιλιάδες ρουκέτες ρίχτηκαν από την μία ενορία στην άλλη με στόχο τον τρούλο του Αγίου Μάρκου από την μια, και το ρολόι στο καμπαναριό της Παναγιάς Ερειθιανής από την άλλη, προσφέροντας ένα μοναδικό θέαμα.
Οι ρουκέτες είναι φτιαγμένες από χαρτί, νίτρο, κάρβουνο και θειάφι, και το ξύλο που χρησιμεύει ως "τιμόνι", υλικά που υπάρχουν στο νησί και οι παρέες των ρουκετατζήδων που τις φτιάχνουν διατηρούν μια παράδοση για περισσότερο από 120 χρόνια, με μυστικά που περνά η μια γενιά στην άλλη. Όπως περιγράφουν, οι ρουκέτες είναι δικές τους, όλα τα έξοδα για την κατασκευή τους είναι δικά τους. Αμέτρητες ώρες περνούν οι παρέες ("συνεργεία" όπως λέγονται χαρακτηριστικά) μέσα στη χρονιά "στοκώνοντας" ρουκέτες για την επομένη ενώ περιγράφουν την εμπειρία και την όλη διαδικασία ως μοναδική και ανυπέρβλητη.

Greece: Golden Dawn stages anti-mosque rally in Athens

Athens, Greece, 14 December 2013.

Several hundred supporters of the Golden Dawn far-right party gathered and marched in Athens in protest over the planned construction of a mosque in the Greek capital.
Athens is the only European Union capital without an official mosque.
After the gathering Golden Dawn supporters marched in Athens for the first time  since the murder of the anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas , who was stabbed to death by a Golden Dawn member.

Shia Muslims perform Zanjeer Zani to commemorate Ashura in Athens


Approximately 650 Shia Muslims gather to commemorate Ashura in Athens. Some of them, perform the traditional self - flagellation ritual called 'Zanjeer Zani’ in solidarity to the martyrdom of Husayn, the grandson of Muhammad.

The practice of ' Zanjeer Zani’ (also known as Tatbir) includes hitting oneself on the back and/or chest with blades attached to chains, causing blood to flow in remembrance of the innocent blood of Imam al Husain ibn Ali which was shed by Yazid's forces in Battle of Karbala.
I talk with a flagellation performer named Sayed Ashir, who is 30 years old, and has migrated from Pakistan to study in Greece, many years ago, and now he has a good living and work. He has been taking part to the ritual of ‘Zanjeer Zani’ since he was teen and although he is covered in blood, he says that he feels no pain.
Shia commonly believe that taking part in Ashura is to be absolved of sins. A popular Shia saying has it that, 'a single tear shed for Husayn washes away a hundred sins'.

Orthodox groups attempt to cancel theater performance


Hundreds of members of far-right party and Orthodox religious groups, gather and protest outside Hytirio Theater staging Terrence McNally’s “Corpus Christi”, a play depicting Jesus. During their attempt to cancel the play they clash with police.

Video: A spectator of the play, says that he was attacked by the protesters and a priest while he was entering to the theater, while police was watching. He says he is a Christian Orthodox but he was not shocked by the play.
