Christmas decorations in Athens for the new year 2013

 Bustling Syntagma Square in front of the Greek Parliament, is now adorned for Christmas.
 An installation consisting of  16 Christmas trees, which were created by 20 students of Interior Architecture is set up in the middle of the square, and with the use of lights and huge LED displays, it has become an alternative, inventive and imaginative proposal adornment of the most luminous square.
 From December 11th and for 25 days a skating rink of 200sqm. is waiting for everyone, who wants to make free rides on the ice from 11.00 to 21.00 at Syntagma Square, as part of Christmas happenings and the new year 2013 celebrations in the Greek capital.

Averof Building Peristyle

A panorama consisting of 270 Mega pixels: The Averof Building of the National Technical University of Athens, that houses the School of Architecture. The Averof is one of the most important and elegant buildings of the Athenian Neoclassical period, located in the center of the city and was designed by Lyssandros Kaftantzoglou as an educational edifice. The initial plan was prepared in 1859,the study was completed in1861, and the foundation was in 1862.

After its completion in 1878, the building was in continuous use for more than 125 years. It reached a deteriorating state and was eventually in great need of restoration and modernisation in order to continue operating as an educational establishment. The conservation project, namely for the Averof to be used again as an educational building, lasted about 5 years and the building became operative in the beginning of 2010.

Today there are graffitis on the walls of the facade and slogans written on the columns, signs of the economic crisis and the decline of the Greek educational system.

Academy Of Athens

The main building of the Academy is a neoclassical building and part of the so-called "Neoclassical Trilogy" of the city of Athens.
The building consists of a central part with two wings, and displays characteristics of the Ionian rhythm.
Its central part is designed along the lines of an amphiprostyle temple.
On either side of the building's facade there are two statues: On the right that of Apollo the guitar-player (3.71 m. high), and on the left that of Athina the defender (4.11 m. high).
In the forecourt to the entrance (in the foreground of the panoramic picture), there are two more statues (2.40 m. high), both seated; on the left that of Plato and on the right that of Socrates.
It is generally acknowledged by both Greek and foreign experts that the building of the Academy of Athens constitutes one of the most exquisite neoclassical buildings worldwide.

Prytaneum of Athens University

The main building of the University consists of a group of buildings forming a double "T", with two symmetrical courtyards. The facade has strictly symmetrical characteristics, with a covered entrance and columns, which complement the entrance of the building. The bases of columns and the capitals of the entrance are perfect replicas of the respective parties to the Propylaea of the Acropolis. The outside statues complete the composition of the entrance. The building is now used as headquarters of the University of Athens, housing the offices of Dean, the Procedural Department and Hall for the official celebrations / ceremonies.

Perama

Perama is located at the westernmost edge of Athens and is 14.7 km away from the city center. The south side of Perama borders the Bay of Keratsini, while the western side faces the waters of the Strait of Salamis. According to the above, the name of Perama is probably due to the position, which is "pass" (Greek: Πέραμα, πέρασμα) from the mainland part of Athens and Piraeus to the island of Salamis. The area is rocky. Indeed, the territory has slopes in some places over 30%. The port city of Perama was once home to a thriving shipbuilding industry, but has seen its fortunes wane over the years as buyers abandoned it for cheaper options outside Greece.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Greek Parliament House

Here is a 260 Megapixel panorama of the East area of Syntagma square, in the center of Athens, where is the Neoclassical building that houses the Parliament of Greece. The choice of location and construction of the building was made by architect Friedrich von Gärtner,(1792-1847) in 1836. The Greek Parliament House is facing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honoring all the unknown soldiers who died or bled for their country. This Monument was inaugurated on March 25th, 1932, the National Day when the Greeks celebrate the declaration of their War of Independence against the Turks. It is guarded by an infantry unit of the Greek army, the Evzones. Evzones wear traditional Greek uniforms and their most distinctive part is foustanela, a kilt-like skirt. The changing of the guards takes place every hour. During their service, the Evzones are not allowed to talk or move at all. Carved signs are written in ancient and modern Greek language on the wall of the tomb. One of them is an excerpt from the speech given by Pericles in 430 BC for the first dead of the Peloponnesian War: «Ανδρών επιφανών πάσα γη τάφος» that reads translated: 'The tomb of the glorious men is anywhere on earth'.

Kaningos Square Athens

Kaningos Square is located in downtown Athens and it is one of the busiest in the city. Here is the Ministry of Commerce, the building of the 7th Art and it is a starting point for several bus lines. The Square is a large triangular open space cleaved by a major city street, known as Academy Street. It was named (Πλατεία Κάνιγγος, Plateía Káningos, Canning Square) after Anglo philhellene George Canning (1770-1827) in appreciation of his supportive stance toward the Greek War of Independence (1821–1830). Kaningos Square has many shops, cafes and stores selling a variety of products; from clothing, footwear, electronic parts, and true Greek items such as locally grown and packaged pistachio nuts and dried fruits.

Academy of Athens night shot

The Academy of Athens is Greece's national academy. The main building of the Academy is a neoclassical building situated between Panepistimiou Street and Akadimias Street. Here is a shot taken on the night of the 11th of April, 2012. We can watch slogans on the walls of Academy, and smashed marbles that have been broken during demonstrations and clashes with Police. Two young homeless have found shelter to spend their night.

The "Praying Hands" graffiti in the center of the Greek capital

In the center of Athens, Greece, at the area Omonoia Square, a graffiti inspired by "The Praying Hands" of Albrecht Dürer. The graffiti is wall painted on the hotel «Vienna» in Piraeus Street. However, the "praying hands" on the wall of the hotel, not turn to pray to God, as in 1506, but down. It's like God himself is praying to save this city and its inhabitants.

Hadrian's Library in the evening

Once you get off from the subway to Monastiraki station, immediately after the Square, and next to Tzistarakis Mosque, then you walk by an imposing complex of Corinthian columns. This rectangular building is Hadrian's Library, and is one of the favorite meeting points of Athens city.

Vathis Square in Athens night shot

Vathis Square in the center of Athens is a key road junction at the city entrance.
From this square start Acharnon Road and Liosion Road that lead to Lamia and Thessaloniki. Marnis Street is a continuation of Karolou Street which continues into the the national highway Athens - Corinth.

There is controversy about the origin of the name of Vathis Square.

-Some believe that it took its name from a man with a similar name.

-But in the late of 19th century, it was named as 'Vathia' as described by the writers of this era. 'Vathia' meant a dent, which gathered and stagnant waters of the stream Kyklovorou​​, coming down from the Polygono (now Marnis Street and its continuation, Karolou Street).

The Athens Polytechnic University Gate at the end of the “Regime Change” era

The gate of the Polytechnic University that was smashed by a tank invasion on 17 November 1973, during the uprising that led to the fall of the Junta and the beginning of the period called as “Regime Change” in Greece. Today more and more analysts are talking about the end of the “Regime Change” era. Center-left and center-right who for almost 40 years monopolized power, have put Greece in the darkest part of the tunnel of economic and social crisis and have condemned the people to poverty for decades. In the upcoming elections scheduled for May 2012, the parties of the coalition, are already operating under the pressure of electoral failure, while the fragmentation of the Left does not allow them to gain power. Nobody may know what will follow.

Bus stop on Stadiou Street - Athens

Stadiou Street in the center of the Greek capital, is joining the two principal squares of Athens: Syntagma Square where stands the Parliament and the Omonoia Square.
Here is a bus stop in front of a jewelery shop, as seen during a night shot. There is graffiti on the walls. One of them reads: "Wildcat strikes! The class struggle is the feast of the poor."
Across the street stands the abandoned historic neoclassical building 'Athinogenis Mansion'.

Bus stop on Stadiou Street

The abandoned historical Hotel ‘Acropole Palace’ in Athens

The hotel was built in 1926-28 and in 1990 UNESCO characterized the building as a shining example of “ArtNouveau” architecture in Europe. In 1973, during the Polytechnic revolt, this hotel was the basement for foreign correspondents, while worldwide famous photographs and films of the era were taken from its balconies. On January 9th, 2012 a major fire broke out at the historic building. It has recently become a shelter for homeless people.
