New leader of the left-wing opposition in Greece breaks a taboo by disclosing surrogacy plans

The new leader of Greece’s opposition has said he and his long-term male partner would like to become parents through surrogacy, a move that challenges taboo in the country.

The first elected official in Greece to openly declare he is gay, Stefanos Kasselakis last month achieved one of the biggest upsets in Greek political history by winning the leadership of Syriza, the left-wing main opposition party.

Until now a little-known former shipping exec and ex-Goldman Sachs trader, 35-year-old Kasselakis is in a civil partnership with American nurse Tyler McBeth.

“We would like to have two boys, Apollo and Elias… through a surrogate mother,” Kasselakis told Alpha TV late on Thursday.

“As a society, we need to provide complete equality,” he said.

“I hope my example will serve as a wake-up call for parents, to learn to talk to their children…and respect their will.”

The issue remains taboo in a country still built around the traditional family model, and where the powerful Orthodox Church frowns on same-sex relations.

Whilst in government in 2015, Syriza introduced same-sex civil partnerships in Greece. But marriage, adoption and surrogacy remain outside the law.

Last month, conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said full equality would be extended to same-sex couples during his next four years in power.

Kasselakis told Kathimerini daily in another interview last month, that as a student he had visited a monastery in Evia where had been baptised “and prayed not to be gay.”

Kasselakis said he was in a relationship with a woman in 2012 when he began struggling with his sexuality.

He eventually came out to his parents at the age of 31 four years ago, he said.

“Meeting Tyler urged me to express myself,” he said.

In the Alpha TV interview, he said he was “very wealthy” by Greek standards.

“In theory I have enough, to not need to work in my life again, though not enough to spend recklessly,” he said.

Kasselakis’ business background is anathema to many Syriza cadres, many of whom were in the 2015 Syriza government that unsuccessfully battled against the austerity imposed by Greece’s EU-IMF creditors during the country’s ten-year financial crisis.

Το ουράνιο τόξο ανέτειλε το βράδυ του Σαββάτου στον Μόλο της Αγίου Νικολάου στην πόλη της Πάτρας. Εκατοντάδες άτομα της ΛΟΑΤΚΙ+ κοινότητας διαδήλωσαν γιορτάζοντας την διαφορετικότητα και απελευθέρωση και δήλωσαν την εναντίωσή τους τους κατά των διακρίσεων, του ρατσισμού και της καταπίεσης.

Thousands join Thessaloniki Pride Parade to celebrate diversity and fight stigmatization

More than 13,000 members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex community (LGBTI) of Greece joined by their families, friends, officials and representatives of civil society organizations, paraded in the streets of Thessaloniki in northern Greece on Saturday, to celebrate diversity and denounce stigmatization based on sexual orientation. Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris marched ahead of the rainbow flag, leading the 6th annual Pride Parade of the city.

Far-right counter protesters attempt to stop Thessaloniki Pride Parade
A group of 20 far-right counter protesters attempted to attack and stop Thessaloniki LGBTQI crowded Pride Parade, while shouting anti-gay slurs. They also shouted homophobic slogans against the Mayor of Thessaloniki. They were stopped by Riot Police. None of them was detained.

Ακροδεξιοί επιχείρησαν να διαλύσουν το Thessaloniki Pride
 Χωρίς επιτυχία ολιγομελής ομάδα ακροδεξιών προσπάθησε να σταματήσει την μεγάλη παρέλαση του Thessaloniki Pride. Tην στιγμή που η παρέλαση βρισκόταν στην οδό Τσιμισκή, ομάδα 20 ακροδεξιών προσπάθησαν με κάδους σκουπιδιών να εμποδίσουν τη διέλευσή της φωνάζοντας υβριστικά συνθήματα. Τελικά απωθήθηκαν από αστυνομικές δυνάμεις, ενώ δεν έγινε καμία προσαγωγή. Θεσσαλονίκη 17 Ιούνη 2017.

Thousands join Athens Pride parade held by LGBTQI community to celebrate diversity

Thousands of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex community (LGBTQI) of Greece, joined by their families, friends, officials and representatives of civil society organizations, paraded in the streets of central Athens on Saturday to celebrate diversity and denounce stigmatization based on sexual orientation.

 Η Παρέλαση Υπερηφάνειας του Athens Pride 2017.
Για πρώτη φορά το Φεστιβάλ Υπερηφάνειας της Αθήνας 2017 έγινε στην πλατεία Συντάγματος και προσέλκυσε χιλιάδες κόσμου. Με κεντρικό σύνθημα "Θέμα Παιδείας" το απόγευμα του Σαββάτου έγινε η παρέλαση υπερηφάνειας στο κέντρο της πρωτεύουσας, ενώ το βράδυ ακολoύθησε μεγάλη συναυλία.

Thousands Attend Twelfth Annual Gay Pride Parade in Athens Greece

The center of Athens was painted in the colors of the rainbow on Saturday afternoon, while thousands attended the eleventh annual gay pride parade, which was organized by LGBTQI activists.
The mission of Athens Pride is to fight discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex  people and maximize how "visible" are in society, while promoting their rights.
It is a  non-profit, all-volunteer event that also provides programs to raise youth awareness and support groups via their volunteer services.
The Mayor of Athens, Giorgos Kaminis while declaring the start of the Athens Pride 2016, pledged that next year he will give Syntagma Square for the event.

Greece: LGBTQ activists protest against Putin's visit in Athens

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday visited Athens on his first trip to a European Union country this year.
At least 2,500 members of Greek police, security and anti-terror units, were deployed all along the way from Athens airport to the city center, where the Russian President Vladimir met with PM Tsipras to discuss energy and privatization deals in the cash-strapped country.
At the same time in Syntagma Square, a group of activists of the Athens LGBTQ Youth Community named "Color Youth" marched to the Parliament holding Russian, Greek, and rainbow flags and they were stopped by the Police blockade. They shouted slogans against Russian's state oppression of human rights.
As they said : "We welcome the Russian President appropriately, raising the rainbow flag, together with the Greek and Russian! Come with us to defend the LGBTQ identity in Greece, Russia and in every part of the planet and express our sympathy to the Russian LGBTQ people".

Με αφορμή την επίσκεψη του Βλαντιμίρ Πούτιν στην Αθήνα (ο οποίος εποφθαλμιά την ενέργεια και τις ιδιωτικοποιήσεις) η Color Youth Κοινότητα LGBTQ Νέων ΑΘήνας οργάνωσε δράση διαμαρτυρίας στο Σύνταγμα. Όπως ανάφεραν στο κάλεσμα τους υποδεχόμαστε τον Πούτιν καταλλήλως, ''υψώνοντας'' τη rainbow σημαία, πλαισιωμένη από την ελληνική και τη ρωσική! Για να υπερασπιστούμε τη ΛΟΑΤΚΙ+ ταυτότητα στην Ελλάδα, τη Ρωσία και σε κάθε μεριά του πλανήτη και να εκφράσουμε τη συμπαράσταση μας στη ρωσική lgbtqi+.

Greece legalizes same-sex civil unions

 Athens Greece 22 December 2015.
Greek LGBT rights activists demonstrate outside parliament while a bill is being voted, granting same-sex couples the right to a civil union, despite strong opposition from the influential Orthodox church.
The bill comes just two years after the country was condemned for discrimination.
Members of the Greek gay, lesbian and transsexual community had earlier staged protests outside  the Athens cathedral. Two activists in clerical outfits kissed in front of Athens' Metropolitan Church, to protest the Orthodox Church's rejection of same-sex civil unions and homophobic remarks by Bishops.

Την ώρα που στη Βουλή είναι σε εξέλιξη η συζήτηση της Ολομέλειας για το νομοσχέδιο για το Σύμφωνο Συμβίωσης, μέλη της ΛΟΑΤΚΙ κοινότητας συγκεντρώθηκαν όπως είχαν προαναγγείλει έξω από τη Μητρόπολη Αθηνών, προκειμένου να διαμαρτυρηθούν για την λεκτική επίθεση μίσους εναντίον των συνανθρώπων μας που έκανε ο ανώτατος δημόσιος υπάλληλος κάτοχος του θρόνου της Μητρόπολης Αιγιαλείας και Καλαβρύτων, Αμβρόσιος. Οι ακτιβιστές φώναξαν συνθήματα και κρατούσαν πανό που έγραφε" Η αγάπη δεν είναι αμαρτία"  ενώ το γκέι ζευγάρι που φιλιούνταν φορούσε ράσα.
Ωστόσο δεν έλειψαν οι έντονες διαμαρτυρίες και λεκτικές επιθέσεις από κάποιους πολίτες κρυμμένους πίσω από μαύρα γυαλιά, που όπως αποδείχτηκε δεν ήταν απλοί περαστικοί, άλλα ήλθαν εσκεμμένα, αφού μάλιστα είχαν έρθει στο σημείο της διαμαρτυρίας αρκετή ώρα πριν να ξεκινήσει με σκοπό να δημιουργήσουν φασαρία.
