St. Porphyrius Greek Orthodox Church was hit by Israeli air strike in Gaza

GAZA, Oct 20: A blast went off at a building on the premises of the St. Porphyrius Greek Orthodox Church campus in Gaza City on Thursday night while dozens of displaced families were sheltering there. Rescuers were pulling people out of the rubble, several of whom were injured, according to people at the site.

Israel bombed a house bordering on the Greek Orthodox church in Gaza, which brought down the assembly hall where around 50 Christians were having refuge. At least a child was murdered and several people injured, all Christians. Many are still under the rubble.Twitter @RahebM

Patriarchate of Jerusalem: Targeting churches and shelters are crimes of war
Published by The Orthodox Times
Oct 20, 2023.
The Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem expressed in an announcement its strongest condemnation of the Israeli airstrike that have struck its church compound in the city of Gaza.
The Patriarchate emphasizes in the announcement that targeting churches and their institutions, along with the shelters they provide to protect innocent citizens, especially children and women who have lost their homes due to Israeli airstrikes on residential areas over the past thirteen days, constitutes a war crime that cannot be ignored.
The Patriarchate added that despite the evident targeting of the facilities and shelters of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and other churches – including the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem Hospital, other schools, and social institutions – the Patriarchate, along with the other churches, remain committed to fulfilling its religious and moral duty in providing assistance, support, and refuge to those in need, amidst continuous Israeli demands to evacuate these institutions of civilians and the pressures exerted on the churches in this regard.
Finally, the Patriarchate stresses that it will not abandon its religious and humanitarian duty, rooted in its Christian values, to provide all that is necessary in times of war and peace alike.

-Palestinian and Arab media reported in recent days on some 1,000 refugees who fled from neighborhoods under fire and found shelter in the Greek Orthodox church of St. Porphyrius in Gaza. Archbishop Alexius, the head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Gaza, said the church did its duty and opened its doors to the refugees, mostly women and children.

The reports on the church made headlines all over the Arab world, in light of reports from Iraq on the flight of tens of thousands of Christians from its northern regions because of threats from the Islamic State organization.

New leader of the left-wing opposition in Greece breaks a taboo by disclosing surrogacy plans

The new leader of Greece’s opposition has said he and his long-term male partner would like to become parents through surrogacy, a move that challenges taboo in the country.

The first elected official in Greece to openly declare he is gay, Stefanos Kasselakis last month achieved one of the biggest upsets in Greek political history by winning the leadership of Syriza, the left-wing main opposition party.

Until now a little-known former shipping exec and ex-Goldman Sachs trader, 35-year-old Kasselakis is in a civil partnership with American nurse Tyler McBeth.

“We would like to have two boys, Apollo and Elias… through a surrogate mother,” Kasselakis told Alpha TV late on Thursday.

“As a society, we need to provide complete equality,” he said.

“I hope my example will serve as a wake-up call for parents, to learn to talk to their children…and respect their will.”

The issue remains taboo in a country still built around the traditional family model, and where the powerful Orthodox Church frowns on same-sex relations.

Whilst in government in 2015, Syriza introduced same-sex civil partnerships in Greece. But marriage, adoption and surrogacy remain outside the law.

Last month, conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said full equality would be extended to same-sex couples during his next four years in power.

Kasselakis told Kathimerini daily in another interview last month, that as a student he had visited a monastery in Evia where had been baptised “and prayed not to be gay.

Kasselakis said he was in a relationship with a woman in 2012 when he began struggling with his sexuality.

He eventually came out to his parents at the age of 31 four years ago, he said.

“Meeting Tyler urged me to express myself,” he said.

In the Alpha TV interview, he said he was “very wealthy” by Greek standards.

“In theory I have enough, to not need to work in my life again, though not enough to spend recklessly,” he said.

Kasselakis’ business background is anathema to many Syriza cadres, many of whom were in the 2015 Syriza government that unsuccessfully battled against the austerity imposed by Greece’s EU-IMF creditors during the country’s ten-year financial crisis.
