Shrove Thursday of Poverty in Athens 2014

Where need meets with tradition.
Athens, Greece, 20 February 2014.
Hungry people waited for more than two hours in the queue for a portion of grilled meat, which the butchers of Athens Central Market offered in a handout to mark the celebrations of Shrove Thursday. From 9am until noon, 2.5 tones of meat were given out, in 3000 divided portions to the poor, unemployed and homeless citizens of the Greek capital. The organizers pointed out that this year the crowd was much more than any other year, a living proof that poverty has increased. There were pokes and shouts of those who waited in line to get a portion. While short after 2pm, people that could not stand waiting anymore, went through the railings and grabbed the meat, cooked or raw, put it in plastic bags and left. Reportage: Electra Viskadouraki.
