Vegetable growers and sellers who have already closed their street markets indefinitely this week, opposing the bill of the Ministry of Development, which affects their sector, staged more handout events on Saturday in several areas of Athens.
The vendors distributed free veggies, fruits and fish while there were long queues of people waiting patiently.
Security measures were taken so that the people would approach the stands in order.
At the end of the distribution, some people started looting the remaining veggies that would normally go for garbage.
The President of the Greek Federation of Market Vendors, Mr Kostas Kakarantzas speaking on the camera is translated:
" We continue to face the intransigence of the Government.
The Government believes that by adopting the bill, we will bend and we will return to our jobs.
We inform them that we will not lower the flag of our struggle, unless they get back this bill which is a tombstone for the public markets."

Μεγάλες ουρές σχηματίστηκαν και το Σάββατο στη δωρεάν διανομή τροφίμων από παραγωγούς λαϊκών αγορών στον Περισσό. Πλήθος κόσμου περίμενε υπομονετικά, προκειμένου να γεμίσει μερικές τσάντες δωρεάν τρόφιμα. Οι παραγωγοί και οι πωλητές λαϊκών δηλώνουν αποφασισμένοι να συνεχίσουν τις κινητοποιήσεις τους σε όλη τη χώρα και διαμηνύουν στην κυβέρνηση ότι δεν θα καμφθεί το ηθικό τους: όπως δηλώνει ο Πρόεδρος της Πανελλήνιας Ομοσπονδίας Σωματείων Πωλητών Λαϊκών Αγορών (ΠΟΣΠΛΑ) Κώστας Κακαράντζας θα γυρίσουν στις δουλείες τους μόνο όταν αποσυρθεί αυτό το νομοσχέδιο - ταφόπλακα για το θεσμό των λαϊκών αγορών.
