Pontian Greek Genocide Memory Day in Athens

Video: Changing of the Guards ceremony on Pontian Greek Genocide Memory Day

The Changing of the Guards ceremony was held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, with the Evzones of the Presidential Guard dressed in the traditional costume of the Pontic Greeks, during the official event for the Pontian Greek Genocide Memory Day. Annually on May 19 in Greece and around the world, memorial services are held to honor memory of the Pontian Greek Genocide victims. In 1994 the Hellenic Parliament recognized and condemned the genocide of more than 600 thousand Pontian Greeks. Records kept mainly by priests show a minimum 350,000 Pontian Greeks exterminated by Turkish troops and Kurdish militias during 1915-1923. Other sources including foreign missionaries mention 500,000 deaths, most through deportation and forced marches into the Anatolian desert. Greek cities (Pafra, Samsous, Kerasous, and Trapezous) endured massacres and deportations that destroyed their populations. The Pontic Genocide is one of the darkest moments in Greece’s history and has been recognized by Armenia, Greece, Cyprus, Sweden and the Artsakh Republic. Athens Greece 19 May, 2018.

Pontic Greeks perform the Serra dance ahead of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, during the official event for the Pontian Greek Genocide Memory Day. The Serra is a war dance of the Pontic Greeks. It's also referred to as the Pyrrichio or Lazikon. The ancient origins of the dance can be proven as the dance moves resemble those of the ancient Pyrrhic dance. Athens Greece 19 May, 2018.

Yanis Varoufakis makes a statement about the message of today's mobilization. He says:
"The 1st of May is a splendid opportunity for us to remember, that the working class of the world, - not of our countries individually - is obliged by History to fight the same struggles again and again and again. There is no such thing as a final victory, there is no such thing as a final defeat. In 1886 workers died on the streets of Chicago, in order to secure their right of a limited day- that is eight hours of work, no more - to social security, to descent conditions at work, to dignity, to effectively having the right to treat themselves as something they own and not something that is owned by others. And again today we have exactly the same issues. The working class of today is facing uberization, constant internships and completely annihilation of Trade Unions' rights, and any kind of labor protection.  Today we remember the struggles of the past, in order to be able to win the struggles of the future, on behalf of, not just the workers and wage laborists, but of humanity as a whole."
