Tens of migrant residents of the area demonstrated in the narrow streets of this area of Athens center. Amerikis square is an area with many old apartment buildings, and for the last 20 years the area is mainly inhabited with migrant workers coming from many parts of the world.
The rally was peaceful, while protesters dynamically chanted slogans against fascism.
The organizers and representatives that made a speech in the beginning of the rally said that "the fascists who have shut down the playground in the Square of Saint Panteleimonas and are claiming control of the area, have lately tried to expand to the Ameriki square and the neighborhoods around it. They organized a pogrom, they attacked shops owned by immigrants and they smashed the offices of the Tanzanian Community. The area faces huge problems like racist attacks against the life of anyone who is different, the hospital of the area is closing down, as of recent austerity measures, the schools and the nurseries are shrinking, the public cleaning services and the free spaces are falling apart. In front of all these problems, the government, the bosses and the Troika want to turn us, the workers and the poor, one against the other, instead of uniting against the real enemy".
